Municipality of Prishtina with a sustainable and humane approach to the treatment of stray dogs.
The Municipality has started with online information for citizens on what is being done on the issue of stray dogs and is the first Municipality to have such an approach regarding this issue.
As shown in the video, the Municipality is committed to completing its ten-point strategy for addressing the management and control of dogs with and without owners and has:
- Established an inter-institutional group to address the issue of stray dogs within municipal institutions and the central level
- Launched the CNVR project where monitoring is open to all interested parties
- Created feeding points for stray dogs to prevent roaming of dogs so that they are calmer on the food and water regard
- Planned to build a Temporary Care Center for the treatment of stray animals
- The introduction of ‘neighborhood caretakers’ for stray animals is being planned
Whereas, at the central level, KFVA has already published the tender for contracting veterinary entities and is very soon expected to begin the identification and registration of dogs with keepers (owners), where castration/sterilization will be provided free of charge for all interested dog owners.
Also, regarding the control of dog breeders, we are waiting for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development to establish a working group to review and approve the Administrative Instruction on Licensing and Control of Companion Animal Breeders and we hope to work in this direction as soon as possible as it is an essential measure.
The municipality has also dedicated a phone line to report ‘aggressive’ cases.
However, we urge you to cooperate with the Municipality by calling those numbers when you see untreated dogs without eartags, and try to establish a healthy connection with the dogs in the neighborhood.
Dogs become aggressive when people generally mistreat them, so do not mistreat them and prevent your neighbors from mistreating or abandoning them, and try to feed them whenever you can, as much as you can.
