In the absence of access to water, high summer temperatures are dangerous for stray animals (and other animals in general). Without proper care, many animals find it impossible to cope with these extremely hot weather conditions.
With small but significant actions, we can help stray animals survive the extreme heat. Some ways you can help:
Place water bowls 💧: Place as many water bowls as possible in places suitable for stray animals but not near schools, hospitals or markets where stray animals would be endangered by banishment or other problems with citizens who are afraid or do not like animals. You will be amazed at the number of other creatures that would benefit from this simple action. Doing so would quench the thirst of thousands of creatures, large and small – from dogs and cats to birds, ants, wasps, bees and even snails.
Feed the animals 🍎: Feeding stray animals with fruits and vegetables can be a good treatment for them, as they are sweet and help the animals stay hydrated. Before you do this, learn what fruits and vegetables dogs and cats can eat: https://trupanion.com/pet-care/fruits-and-veggies-for-pets – some fruits and vegetables are dangerous for animals, so we recommend that you be well informed before the help you will give.
Take precautions ❗️: Difficulty breathing and abnormal head movements are signs of exhaustion or exposure to heat. Pour plenty of room temperature water into the animals’s body to cool them, wipe them with a damp towel and call a veterinarian or transport the animal to the nearest veterinary clinic ifa necessary.
Save a life 🛟: Keep an eye on all the animals you see outside. Make sure they have enough water and shelter. If you find an animal in distress, contact a veterinarian or transport the animal to the nearest veterinary clinic if possible.
Create a shadowy spot/shelter 🏠: Creating a cool, shadowy spot for stray animals can be a lifeline for them during the scorching summer heat. Here’s a simple guide on how you can help:
Location: Choose a quiet, easily accessible place that stray animals frequent. Ideally, it should be away from heavy traffic or noise.
Shelter: You can use an old cardboard box, dog house, or even a table to create the shelter. Make sure it’s sturdy and wide enough to provide ample shade.
Comfort: Pad the bottom with soft materials like old towels or blankets. This not only provides a comfortable resting spot but also insulates against the hot ground.
Water: Always leave a bowl of fresh water in the shade. Remember to change it regularly to keep it clean and cool.
Check: Monitor the spot when you can to ensure it’s being used and hasn’t been disturbed.
