The Basic Court in Prizren found guilty a person in the Municipality of Suhareka, who was accused of animal abuse under Article 346 of the Criminal Code.

Our organization has filed a criminal complaint in the summer of this year, against the person in question and it is to be seen positively how the justice authorities have taken over this case faster than usual and have found guilty an individual who has mistreated a stray dog, causing his aggressive dog to attack, hurt, chase in anxiety and stress, the street dog, which most likely did not escape suffering and injury.

The aggressiveness of dogs as companion animals, is a clear sign that they are living a life of nightmare. Aggressive dogs are also victims of abuse by their keeper(s).
Although for our organization the sentence imposed in this case is very low, especially given that the dog of the accused was not confiscated, it is still one of the first cases of legal punishment due to animal abuse. Unfortunately we do not know about the fate of the stray dog, but chances are it is no longer alive.

We recall to your attention that our organization also met with the Chief State Prosecutor, precisely to talk about the more serious treatment of criminal offenses of animal cruelty.

We will continue to address our complaints further and take the next legal steps for the various cases we have filed quite some time ago in the Kosovo prosecutor’s offices and we will constantly seek perfection in the work of prosecutors to make proper accusations to abusive individuals and require the Court to impose maximum penalties for all cases of animal abuse.

Our organization will also continue to assist the Prosecution and the Police in filing criminal offenses of animal cruelty and dogfights. It is up to the Prosecution and the courts then, to do their job to bring the perpetrators of these crimes in confrontation with justice and punish them with the maximum sentences.
