Our organization is a witness and has often received complaints about the insults and prejudices experienced by activists who take care of stray animals. In the video below, the dogs are seen resting and are suddenly they are scared and disturbed by a group of men. The activist who helps these dogs has been threatened by the Police that the dogs will be taken away, but with the help of our organization, the Police have realized that they cannot do such a thing and the dogs and the activist who takes care of them, for the moment are not harassed.
Unfortunately, in some cases, even the Kosovo Police has not been cooperative at all, and in fact, there have been cases when the police officers of the Kosovo Police have threatened the activists with “fines” because they take care of stray animals.
Citizens should understand that the activists who care for stray animals are not to blame because the state institutions did not work properly and allowed the number of dogs on the streets to grow uncontrollably.
For many stray animals, the care of activists makes the difference between life and death. Until now, activists and animal lovers have saved lots of lives of stray animals, spending even their last money to help animals.
It is not the fault of activists that we have so many dogs on the streets. There is not a single activist or true animal lover in Kosovo who is happy with the current situation with stray dogs.
Citizens should demand accountability from the institutions and officials who are paid with our taxes to solve this problem and help in this process as well.
However, we also call on the activists who feed stray animals, to take care and to feed community animals away from public spaces with a high frequency of citizens, and especially away from people who pose a danger to animals and people. Also, we call on the activists to report any threats and insults to the Police. If the Police does not act according to the laws in force, everyone can notify our organization and we will help to demand legal responsibility from each person who does not respect the laws, including the Kosovo Police.
A big thank you to all those who take care of stray animals and stay close to them in difficult times!
