Animal Rights Foundation Kosovo

As you have seen during these last few days, our country has faced numerous floods from heavy rainfall.

One of the places affected by these floods is the so-called “shelter” of more than 50 dogs, allegedly managed by Flora Bujupi.

During these floods, in this location, the shelter was flooded and in the absence of Mrs. Bujupi, seven dogs have lost their lives so far.

The Kosovo Pet Rescue organization has also contacted the American KFOR, who helped on the night of the flood on January 11th, 2021. KFOR has also asked for help from the StrayCoco organization that operates in Kosovo.

Natural floods such as the recent ones in our country are a disaster, but this does not at all justify the absence of Mrs. Bujupi in her shelter, when for 2 days in a row, the rain has not stopped. Such floods throughout our country, were not created for 2 hours, but as a result of two days of unstoppable and heavy rainfall. If this “shelter” had enough staff and performed the work professionally, the damage from these floods would be much smaller, and there would be no death of dogs.

The lack of professional management of the “shelter” in question has been observed for many years now in our country. Mrs. Bujupi says that he has 10 years of experience in this aspect, and still for many years now, there is no improvement of conditions.

We are aware of the dire situation of animals in Kosovo, especially stray animals, and we understand the activists who try to contribute as much as they can, but the good intention to help the animals does not justify no one who, by his or her own actions and lack of professional skills to manage a “shelter”, ends up endangering the welfare of animals, rather than helping them. Or as in the case of Mrs. Bujupi, which alone tries to take care of more than 50 dogs. This, alone, is impossible.

Eventual shelters should be managed by professional people, with funds and complete staff, and not a prerequisite for the opening of the shelter to be only the good intention. With good intentions alone, the welfare and dignity of animals cannot be protected.

Therefore, measures that should be taken to prevent such a thing from happening again:

  • Together with the Kosova Pet Rescue organization and with the professional veterinary assistance of the StrayCoco organization, our organization will be committed to finding adopters for dogs in the shelter of Mrs. Bujupi, so that the number of dogs in this shelter drops significantly. As we told Mrs. Bujupi not only now, but also many times before, with the capacities she has, she should not accept new dogs in the shelter. Simply, there is no capacity to care for large number of dogs.
  • Ensure that Ms. Bujupi stops her activity to rescue dogs because she has gone out of her management capacities because the number of sheltered dogs is only increasing. There are also a sufficient number in the old shelter in Lipjan, which remained to be transferred to the shelter of Ferizaj.

Therefore, we call on all animal lovers to help save the dogs in that shelter either through donations that will be managed by us or through the commitment to find adopters for these dogs.

To prevent any possible misuse and to ensure that the funds raised are used for the purpose for which they were raised, the funds will be collected through our organization’s bank account, so that they can then be used to cover the costs of rescuing dogs in this shelter.

It is quite urgent to find a solution as soon as possible for these puppies, as another flood would have fatal consequences for the dogs.
