Our organization often receives reports from citizens about “aggressive” dogs in their neighborhoods. Many of these cases are not about aggression but simply about misinterpreting dog behavior.

One of these cases, we had the opportunity to analyze closely, where we received reports of an “aggressive” dog that was bothering residents of the neighborhood. What we saw was the complete opposite.

We saw a frightened dog, too concentrated to protect its 5 puppies, from the dangers of life on the street.

Although initially the puppy started to bark at us, with care shown to her and the puppies, and by feeding them, the dog came very close to us, and was fed from our hands. With a few minutes of care and kindness, the dog’s behavior towards other people also improved significantly.

Of course there can be no denying that there are cases of dogs that have really shown aggression, but in most cases, we are dealing with misinterpretation of the behavior of poor dogs, who require nothing more than a little food and to not be abused by people.

The community should definitely commit to caring for the dogs on the street, providing at least food and water for them, and not mistreat them but show understanding and compassion.

On the other hand, citizens can not be blamed for the lack of information on the behavior and nature of dogs, as the institutions have never undertaken anything and have not organized any information campaign to either inform citizens about dog treatment projects, or to promote caring for animals and their responsible keeping.

Dog behavior towards humans is directly related to human behavior towards dogs, therefore we as a society and as a more intelligent species, should change the behaviors towards animals on the street, and jointly provide care as much as we can, to contribute to an incident-free coexistence between humans and animals.
