Below you can find a TV interview on KTV (unfortunately only in Albanian language), where we explain the importance of implementing sustainable management measures for the dog population in Kosovo.
When we say ‘dog population’ we mean either dogs with a keeper/owner and stray dogs.
The solution of the stray dog situation is achieved when the control and sustainable management of dogs as companion animals is done, which means, the control of dogs with keeper/owner, as well as the breeding & sale of dogs in Kosovo.
Many Municipal Mayors have promised to citizens to construct dog shelters, without knowing what responsibility that promise requires. Dog shelters can only be built if other sustainable and humane measures on this issue are seriously implemented.
Citizens should not be deceived by the promise that “there will be no more stray dogs” in their municipalities, because there will always be stray dogs as long as the source of the stray dog problem is constantly ignored.
On the other hand, our NGO will be very vigilant against any project done by Kosovo Municipalities to ensure that no ‘death camps’ are being set up for stray dogs (even if unintentionally done). Why we say this, comes from the fact that the Municipalities do not even allocate a budget for CNVR projects (even if they do, the amounts are small and do not achieve the desired effect), we do not believe that proper shelters for stray dogs will be arranged.
Housing dogs is necessary, but it must be done very carefully and with a well thought out plan.
